Abstract

The genus Alpinia Roxb. in South India is revised. It is represented in this region by eight species, falling under different sections and subsections of the sub genus Alpinia viz. A. galanga (Sect. Alpinia subsect. Alpinia). A. calcarata. A. malaccansis, A. mutica, A. smithiae and A. zerumbet (sect. Alpinia subsect. Catimbium), A. abundiflora (Sect. Fax) and A. nigra (Sect. Allughas, subsect. A//ughas). A key for the species, their nomenclature and full descriptions are provided along with other relevant notes.
