Proof reading checklist

Authors are requested to carefully verify the following points during proof correction before providing final approval for publication in Rheedea. The checklist is intended to ensure consistency, accuracy, and adherence to the journal style.

General Formatting

  • Verify page layout, margins, and formatting consistency throughout the manuscript.
  • Check volume number, issue number, page range, and publication year.
  • Ensure DOI is correctly provided on the first page.
  • Verify running title/running head.
  • Ensure scientific names are in bold letters or italicized throughout the manuscript.
  • Check consistency in capitalization, punctuation, spacing, commas, and colons.
  • Avoid unnecessary author citations in titles.

Running title

  • Short title of the paper on Even pages [taxonomic names without authorities].
  • Author name/s (without initials, two authors connected by &, more than two by et al.) on Odd pages.

Title

  • In sentence case avoid author citation
  • Scientific names in italics; not in capital letters
  • Use family names where possible

Author Names and Affiliations

  • Verify spelling and sequence of author names.
  • Ensure initials and surnames are correctly formatted.
  • Check corresponding author details and email address.
  • Verify superscript numbering for affiliations.
  • Ensure complete institutional addresses are provided, including:
    • Department, Institution
    • City/District,
    • State,
    • PIN code (En-dash before pin code with space, For ex., Kerala – 673 635, India)
    • Country
    • Corresponding author: *E-mail: info@rheedea.in 

Abstract and Keywords

  • Check spelling, grammar, punctuation, and spacing.
  • Ensure all scientific names are italicized.
  • Keywords should:
    • not exceed six entries,
    • be arranged alphabetically,
    • avoid repetition of words already used in the title,
    • follow journal style consistently.

Main Text

  • Verify spelling, grammar, punctuation, and spacing throughout.
  • Ensure consistency in headings and subheadings.
  • Check SI units and abbreviations (cm, mm).
  • Scientific names at the beginning of the paragraph should not abbreviate genus name (Ex. Dolomita indica…., not indica).
  • Use:
    • en dash (–) for numerical ranges,
    • multiplication sign (×),
    • italicized et al. where applicable.
    • et al.,, e.g., i.e. - in italics

GPS Data Format

Coordinates should follow standard formatting:

Taxonomic Treatment

  • Accepted Species or varietal names should be in bold where required; author citations should not be bold. Synonyms, basionyms should be italicized.
  • Formulations of nomenclatural novelties (sp. nov., var. nov., comb. nov., stat. nov.) should be in bold.
  • Figure citations should follow journal style (align right):
    • Fig. 1
    • Figs. 1 & 2
    • Figs. 1–5

 Type Citations

  • “Type:” should be italicized.
  • Country names in CAPITAL LETTERS.
  • State names in bold.
  • Dates should follow the format:
    • 08.2018 or
    • September 2018
  • Herbarium acronyms should be in brackets. Barcodes should be provided if available.
  • Verify collection numbers and barcode numbers carefully.

  • Avoid complete sentences in descriptions.
  • Follow standard descriptive sequence in the following order:
    • Habit; Stem; Leaf; Inflorescence; Bract; Flower; Pedicel; Calyx; Corolla; Stamens/Androecium; Ovary/Pistil; Ovule; Fruit; Seed.

Formatting Conventions

  • Use multiplication sign: ×
  • Use en dash (–) for ranges:
    • 2–4 × 3–5 mm
    • 2–4 × c. 5 mm
    • c. 2 × 3 mm
  • No spaces around en dashes or hyphens.
  • Use hyphens correctly in compound words:
    • sub-apical, sub-serrate, multi-flowered, four-flowered, bi-lobed, tri-lobed

The following subheadings should be in italics and not bold (Do not change the order):

  • Arrange specimens alphabetically by:
    • Country, State, District, Locality
  • Country names in CAPITAL LETTERS.
  • State/province names in bold.
  • States separated by periods (.)
  • Districts/localities separated by semicolons (;)
  • Use , s.d., s.loc., s.coll. in italics.
  • Collector name in italics
  • Avoid unnecessary exclamation marks (!).

  • Insert citations within the table where necessary.
  • Avoid bold formatting unless essential.
  • Use left alignment consistently.

Identification Keys

  • Couplets should be balanced.
  • Use right alignment with dotted leaders.
  • Maintain one space between dotted leaders and species names.
